Panda Head 熊猫头

熊猫头 (Panda Head) is the classic Chinese reaction sticker: a panda whose face is a pasted-on, exaggerated human expression, with a caption that carries the joke. People send it instead of words, to tease, to complain or to admit defeat, always half-joking.

Known in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong

What it means

The picture is only half the meme. The caption says the actual line, and the face sets the tone: smug, shocked, weeping or plotting. The one above reads “a real pro doesn’t talk much, but has plenty of stickers”, which is exactly how people use them: the sticker is the reply.

Panda Heads are rude on the surface and friendly underneath. A caption like “do you have any manners?” or “I’m not talking to you” from a friend is a joke, not a fight, as long as it arrives as a sticker. Between strangers or at work it reads as overly familiar, so most people keep it for friends, classmates and group chats.

Where it comes from

Panda Heads grew out of Chinese sticker culture in the 2010s, on QQ, Tieba and then WeChat, where trading stickers (斗图, a “sticker battle”) became a game of its own. The faces were cut from photos and older meme faces and stuck onto a crude panda outline, and anyone could make a new one by changing the caption, which is why there are thousands.

How friends from other cultures read it

To friends from the US, Japan or Korea who haven’t seen them, Panda Heads can look crude or a little creepy, and the joke lives in Chinese text they can’t read. Without the caption, a smirking panda can come across as mockery when it was meant as a hug.

In Taiwan and Hong Kong they’re familiar, though people there have plenty of stickers of their own. If you send one to a friend who doesn’t read Chinese, add a line saying what the caption means, or pick a reaction they already know, like Surprised Pikachu.

How to reply

The natural reply to a Panda Head is another one: answer the caption with a caption, smug for smug, tears for tears. If you don’t have the right sticker, a doge or a laugh works too. MemeWingman can read the caption for you and suggest a sticker that answers it in kind.
