Huh? Cat 猫ミーム
The Huh? Cat is a startled white cat, usually with a loud “HUH?”, that people send when something makes no sense: a strange message, a plot twist, a decision nobody understands. It’s confusion, delivered with comic timing.
Known in the US and across East Asia

What it means
It’s the face you make when you read something three times and it still doesn’t parse. Sent as a reply, it says “wait, what?” without sounding rude.
It’s light enough for almost anyone, though sent after a serious message it can feel dismissive. Use it for the absurd, not the awkward.
Where it comes from
The cat is one of the stock clips of cat meme videos (猫ミーム), short videos that tell everyday stories with cat clips and sound effects, which swept Japanese social media in 2024. The clips themselves came from all over the internet.
How friends from other cultures read it
Cats need no translation, so the Huh? Cat works everywhere. In Japan, 猫ミーム became a whole genre in 2024; Chinese users call these clips 猫meme, and Korean users 고양이 밈.
The one thing to watch is what you’re reacting to. A “HUH?” at a friend’s news can sound like you think it’s silly, so pair it with a question if you genuinely want to know more.
How to reply
Explain yourself, because they didn’t get it, or answer with a reaction of your own: a Surprised Pikachu if the twist is on you, or another cat.
